Portrait of Misaki Kobayashi

About me

Born in Tokyo. While studying law at Chuo University I was hired by Sony's headquarters and, on getting married, left university before graduating. After years abroad on an expat posting, I settled in the Netherlands in 2006.

In 2010 I started an online shop for second-hand Dutch children's clothing and homeware, which became the top result when Japanese customers searched for Dutch goods. In 2011 I founded an import trading company in Nihonbashi, Tokyo; starting with no connections or experience, within a year it had signed contracts with Japan's major department stores and retailers. Horse riding is my hobby, and for about five years I wrote a regular column for a Japanese equestrian magazine.

Today I accompany Japanese companies seeking exclusive contracts with European firms, and interpret for Japanese government delegations and VIP visits. What matters most to me is that both sides leave the meeting understanding each other better than before. I do everything I can so that everyone involved heads home feeling the trip was worth it.
